Sex offender gets four years for working in school
08:27 PM CST on Thursday, December 6, 2007
ST. CHARLES, Ill. (AP) -- A convicted sex offender was sentenced to four years in prison for unlawfully working in a school.
Authorities say 41-year-old Gary L. Gasper of Elgin reported to his job as a temporary food service worker last month at a Batavia middle school. He'd been hired by an independent contractor.
Police say Gasper acted odd about signing a guest register in the school's office. So a police liaison checked his name against the sex offender registry and found a 1992 conviction in Wisconsin for sexually assaulting a 9-year-old.
Batavia police say they have no evidence Gasper had any contact with students.
He pleaded guilty in Kane County to being present within a school zone as a child sex offender.
