Local veteran asked to leave VA hospital
10:20 PM CDT on Tuesday, July 31, 2007
(KMOV)- One local veteran is painting a grim picture of his treatment at a local VA hospital.
Something no returning veteran would expect.
He tells News 4 that he walked into the emergency room and was asked to leave.
Avi Scheinberg, 20, still can't understand how or why it happened.
When he walked into the emergency room at the St. Louis VA Medical Center in midtown, he was asked to leave, even after showing his valid veterans affairs ID card.
Sheinberg who got out of the Army in April, had gone to the hospital suffering abdominal pains.
He said he left with the same pain too.
Scheinberg did return with his discharge papers.
And some 9 hours after first entering the hospital, left with one pill for pain.
His story has the concern of VA officials, who in a statement say, it does not appear that we handled this veteran's care according to our policy.
A spokesperson for the VA says they will be looking into the situation with Avi Scheinberg and his treatment.
They also say, like most ER’s around the country, patients have to wait a long time and they're working to improve that.
