(KMOV) -- Animal rescue workers are helping to save the life of a dog that survived despite all odds.
The dog was shot and left on the side of the road for two weeks.

Rescued dog, Mel
Mel, the rescued dog is on his tenth day of recover.
Animal rescue workers say that the ordeal for the 2-year-old beagle-shepherd mix began a month ago.
Veterinarians say that someone shot Mel in the hindquarters, using a rifle.
The bullet is still lodged in his body.
Rescue workers say that the shot, wounded and bleeding, Mel was left in a box on the side of a country road near Bunker Hill for two weeks in the below zero weather.
Mel was brought to a shelter in Edwardsville and is being cared for by the co-founders of that rescue organization, at their home in Alton.
Mel must be fed every four hours because he is still under-weight, and still faces surgery to remove the bullet fragments.
Despite all of that, his caretakers call him an angel.
Veterinarians estimate that it will be six more weeks of recovery, before Mel is healthy enough for adoption.
Mel is being cared for by the Hope Animal Rescues of Edwardsville
