Woman accused of killing mother, hiding body
10:44 PM CDT on Tuesday, October 14, 2008
GODFREY, Ill. (AP) -- An Alton woman is jailed on $1 million bond after being accused of killing her 86-year-old mother, then hiding the carpet-wrapped body under a wood pile in the dead woman's garage.
Madison County prosecutors charged 60-year-old Marsha Zahn with first-degree murder and concealment of a homicidal death.
Investigators say they went to Harriett Cobb's Godfrey home Sunday evening after a relative requested a well-being check.
Sheriff's Capt. Brad Wells says a woman who answered the door told deputies she was Cobb, although deputies knew that wasn't the case. Authorities later found Cobb's body.
Wells says investigators believe Cobb was beaten and possibly strangled.
There's no word yet on a possible motive.
