Flooding victims learn they won't receive financial help
10:33 PM CDT on Tuesday, October 7, 2008
ST. LOUIS (KMOV) -- Weeks after flash flooding damaged hundreds of homes across the area, some residents are learning they won’t receive the financial help they were hoping to get.
On Tuesday, some residents received a letter from the Metropolitan Sewer District stating that MSD not to blame for the damages.
Some homeowners disagree, saying the district is to blame for the damage to their home.
Several homes had Dumpsters in the front yards that were filled with items ruined by the flood waters.
MSD said it has covered about 3,000 basement backups and are reviewing about 1,600 other cases.
But about 400 residents in the Florissant area were told they would not receive any assistance from MSD.
“I’m going to make sure (residents) get restitution. It’s a false excuse, and I will not let that happen,” said Florissant Mayor Robert Lowery.
MSD spokesman Lance LeComb said residents “are receiving those letters due to Overland flooding. (That’s) what caused the damage of their homes, not a deficiency of the MSD system.”
MSD said residents can appeal the claims if they received a letter.
Lowery said he is going to MSD to speak to its board of directors about the situation.
