ST. LOUIS (KMOV) -- Employees of a St. Peters, Mo., hotel said their paychecks aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on.

Cathy Alverez, a 12-year employee, was proud to work at the Holiday Inn Select, but in May she noticed a big problem when Georgia-based Kronos Hotels and Resorts LLC took over.

The former employee said “working conditions have deteriorated (and) our checks are not clearing.”

Alverez said banks won’t cash her checks. She said employees must present their checks at the hotel’s front desk, where the comptroller cashes it.

Alverez said on some occasions, there isn’t enough cash to cover the checks presented by employees.

“They say we have to be patient, and I say, ‘I'll be honest. One thing you don't fool with is people's checks,’” she said.

Additionally, Alverez said she was offered health benefits, but the company rescinded the offer.

That’s when she and decided to quit. Alverez said other employees have done the same thing.

“I go in (Monday) to get the rest of the money from a month ago, and the GM is at the front desk because they don't have anybody,” Alverez said.

The same company also owns a hotel in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Employees at that hotel are reportedly dealing with bad checks, too.

The owner of the hotels did not return a call seeking comment.
