City of Arnold petition to remove red light cameras
10:28 PM CST on Tuesday, January 6, 2009
ARNOLD, MO (KMOV)- The first city in the area with red light cameras, consider a petition to remove the cameras from its intersections.
A couple of outnumbered council members are hoping to give voters the chance to get the camera in town taken down.
The thousand or so names on their petition carry no weight legally.
But the hope on the part of those who signed it is the council will appreciate the fact a lot of citizens would like to vote on this and go ahead and let them do so in April.
Councilman Matt Hay, who's also a member of the new citizen's group "Don't Tread On Me" said sometimes people who get tickets for running a red light aren't the ones who were driving the car at the time.
Arnold Mayor Mark Powell told News 4 this is clearly a political ploy with a city election coming up in April.
He doesn't believe there's any chance the council would vote to put the red light cameras on a ballot.
He also said that the number of tickets are way down since the cameras were installed, which means the cameras are working because fewer people are running the lights.
