Alcohol possibly to blame in deadly Collinsville crash
01:46 PM CST on Monday, December 1, 2008
ST. LOUIS (KMOV) – Two women were killed early Sunday morning in what police believe may be an alcohol-related crash in Collinsville, IL.
Collinsville police say the accident happened shortly before 2:00 a.m. on Sunday on Beltline Road just east of Johnson Hill Road.
According to the Madison County coroner's office, Benjamin Nicolas, who was driving a westbound 1991 Honda Accord, lost control of his vehicle and traveled across the center line into the path of a 1999 Honda Passport.
Two passengers in the Accord -- Courtney F. Sherfy, 20, and Tara Wilson, 20, both of Granite City, IL -- were pronounced dead at the scene.
The coroner’s office says that both women died “as the result of multiple traumas.” Neither woman appeared to have been wearing a seatbelt.
Nicolas was transported to a St. Louis hospital for treatment.
The occupants of the Honda Passport had minor injuries.
