Illinois police cracking down on drunk drivers this weekend
04:51 PM CDT on Thursday, July 2, 2009
(KMOV) -- Police across Illinois are cracking down on drunk driving this holiday, and they're specifically targeting nighttime drivers.
They say a disproportionate number of crashes occur at night, and a high percentage of the fatal accidents involve alcohol.
For the last four years, some 54% of drivers involved in fatal crashes from midnight to 3 a.m. have been drinking alcohol.
The State Police are teaming up with local officers in this effort.
Last Fourth of July holiday, the State Police handled over 640 crashes, with five fatalities.
