News 4 Investigates: Daily Briefing

(KMOV) - News 4 Investigates discovered that every day, staggering amounts of safe and edible food are being thrown away.

Chief investigative reporter Steve Chamraz exposes how America's largest retailer takes cart after cart of perfectly good food and tosses it in the trash.

We have alot of people that would love to eat it.

I think its dumb... I can't believe that they can't donate the "old" food. I work for wal-mart and I fully understand why they can't donate, but I thinks its just all a big waste. Not just food its everything from Dog food, to candy, to people food, deli, bakery, anything that comes open whether its packed or not we have to throw it all away.... this is a good reason why all of our landfills are getting too full... Guess they didn't think about that....

SHAME ON THEM....It can be a tax deduction and benefit the communities. What happened to helping the community like they claim they do.

I have worked in a Walmart dairy for 3 years. They throw it out rather than donate food because their distributers will reinburst them with the empty package. Walmart is stil making money off expired food that way.

I think there should be a regular pick up by local food banks.

They should have been doing this months back. I am really disappointed in Wal-mart, I hear so many "bad" things about them. (Sometimes their prices are not "that" good) I am glad to hear this food policy has changed.

With so many people needing food and shelter, I find this incomprehensible. You mean to tell me they can't find any homeless shelters, food pantries and soup kitchens, to make a charitable donation? Plus, they should be able to take a write off on their income tax.
Who or what is responsible for this foolish decision?

Have you ever looked at the waste in a fast food restaurant. I've seen good food go into the trash because it had ketsup on it and wasn't supposed to...or was setting under the warming lights for too long. Why don't they save these for shelters. Wal-mart can not be the only one who disposes of what someone is calling "Perfectly good food"...but they are the biggest target and gets the biggest coverage. I live in a small town and our local Wal-Mart is a fantastic supporter of community projects and in helping the community. The manager spends a lot of energy, effort and hours outside her normal day participating in Wal-Mart's name in the community.
Those of you who condemn Wal-Mart or Sam's Clubs have evidentually not experienced Wal-Mart's generousity and commitment to the community they service.
No company can remain competitive and be wastefull too...think about it.

I think its ironic that they are caught throwing out "so called" good food when they have a long history of buying food thats expired in bulk and passing that CHEAP price on to the consumer, how manty times have you bought a loaf of bread thats close or even expired or try the chips that are always stale. I also like the gimmick about buy american I guess they figured out were all not that stupid since the majority is shipped from other countries. I just got tired of spending my hard earned dollar on food that was moldy or just BAD I live about 30 miles from WAl-MART so its another $5.00 to return my bad food, I wish they could sell me some thats still good I would actually have paid for it but that stopped when they messed up my perscription and I have no $ to sue them because there just too big for the liitle guy

Why on EARTH would you think that Wal-Mart should give away OLD food?!?!?! If it is not fit for sale, why would you expect them to give it to the underprivileged? Just because someone needs to get food through a shelter or food pantry doesn't mean they deserve to eat rotten, old, stale, disgusting food!!! I commend Wal-Mart on not giving away OLD food! I am disappointed in KMOV's suggestion that Wal-Mart is not giving back to the community. On average, WM gives more than their fair share to food banks and homeless shelters already. They give DOLLARS and SUPPLIES that are NOT STALE or unfit for sale! Give me a break Channel 4!

It is the LAW to throw out outdated Items. If they were giving them away and someone got sick then you would want to sue them. It is a lose lose situation that you are oputting them in. What about all the other stores that do the same thing? Why are we not talking about them. And for the pay issue... Wal Mart is not a career... use it while you go to school to better yourself. Don't take a low paying job and then complain because you don't make enough.

THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR PEOPLE GOING WITHOUT FOOD.WALMART SHOULD AT LEAST GIVE IT TO A SHELTER FOR THE HOMELESS SO THEY THE HOMELESS WONT GO WITHOUT FOOD.OR AT LEAST SELL IT TO THE PUBLIC CHEAP.THATS ALL THANK YOU.THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR THIS TO TAKE PLACE.

If you are so concerned with what Wal-Mart does with their outdated food products, then be the big one and contact Wal-Mart. Find out what can be done to recycle the food, if it is legally possible! Anyone can gripe and complain but not everyone has the gumption to turn the situation around. I'm tired of Wal-Mart bashing!

Wal-Mart is junk-mart. If you want quality, do not shop there. Remember, you get what you pay for, and if you are not making enough money to shop at a better place, then you need a better job. I used to shop there, but when customer service and product quality decreased, I stopped shopping there. I am no longer one of the mindless sheep that cannot stay away.

WalMart and Sam's Club should definitely be ashamed. I worked for WalMart on Jungermann Road many years ago. It was what I expected. A low paying, cruddy, little retail job. But nothing I hadn't expected.
At the time, that WalMart wasn't a Supercenter. I don't know if it now or not.
But to see those stores throwing away food that could be going to the needy and the homeless and the home-bound is appalling!
And for those of you that are trying to defend WalMart, remember that Sam Walton wanted WalMart to benefit and help American companies and the American people. Right now WalMart and Sam's Club do neither.
Shame on them!

I believe they are ignorant enough to do something like that. They also try to rob you when you use their gift cards. BEWARE!

I worked for walmart for 2 years as a cashier and i think they were great. They excellent Blue Cross Blue Sheild Ins and pay much better than any other retailer ive ever seen. And as for the toys from china that everyone is accusing walmart of carrying, HELLO Target, Kmart, Toysrus and many more carry the EXACT same stuff! Ppl are just angry that their businesses arent so successful.

i am tired of people putting down wal-mart. the commercials running on tv about the recall of stuff from china, what about all the food that was recalled from the union grocery stores because of bad food. wal mart can do what they want with the food. health insurance is not giving to union stores for 2 years after joining the union. you have to work for 2 years before even getting health insurance. i hate the unions. they try and tell what good wages they pay, but then you have to pay union dues every week.

Great company!!! Thanks for serving the public with such great prices.

if someone became ill with food poisioning the trial lawyers would swoop down on them.
I don't blame
wal Mart I blame the lawyers
