Safety officials: Bumper standards needed for big vehicles

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) -- The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says its latest bumper tests show why the federal government needs to set standards for bumpers on SUVs, pickups, and vans.
In tests in which front bumpers on the Hummer H3, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Mitsubishi Endeavor overrode the rear bumpers of a stationary Hyundai Sonata, damage to the Sonatas ranged from $3,891 to $4,737.
In tests with Ford Explorers, whose bumpers line up pretty well with those on cars, the damage to the Sonata was only about one-third as much that caused by the other three.
That's prompted the Institute to petition the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to regulate the bumpers on light trucks just as it regulates those on cars.
