(CBS) -- A new study by researchers at the University of Minnesota finds drinking two or more sodas a day gave subjects an 87-percent higher risk of developing pancreatic cancer.
Experts recommend consuming less sugar by drinking diet soda or other drinks. But some doctors are wary of the new study's conclusions, saying that there are more important risk factors folks should keep an eye on.
Assistant Professor of Surgery at UW Hospital, Dr. Emily Winslow said, “If a patient wanted to reduce their risk of pancreas cancer the number one thing they should do is not smoke.”
“That's the one thing to be proven to have a very high increase in the relative risk of pancreas cancer,” Wilson said. “More than three times what the study suggests the increase by soda consumption was.”
Other studies show obesity also has a strong link to pancreatic cancer.
