(KMOV.com) -- A man who was pulled over for a simple traffic offense led police on a high speed chase in East Alton early Friday morning.
Police said the chase started around 12:30 a.m. on westbound Illinois Route 143. Officers pulled over a driver for a minor traffic offense, but the he took off. Police pursued the vehicle and the chase hit speeds of 100 mph.
The 25-year-old man eventually abandoned his tan-colored Lincoln along IL-143 near the lock and dam near the Alton riverfront. The man then fled on foot.
The suspect was caught around 1:48 a.m. in some brush near the area where he bailed out of his car. Authorities said the guy turned a simple ticket into a felony fleeing and eluding charge.
After police caught the suspect they discovered he had outstanding warrants.
