(KMOV) -- There will be increased security at Normandy High School on Thursday morning after a 10th grade student was shot in the leg. The shooting happened while the student was leaving school Wednesday afternoon and the suspect is still on the loose.
Authorities say the shooting took place at Martin Luther King Drive and Lucas and Hunt, which is down the street from the school. It happened shortly after the school's regular dismissal time of 2:55 p.m.
According to police, the victim was an innocent bystander and was hit when the suspect opened fire in a group of students. The victim's injuries do not appear to be life threatening; he is expected to return to school on Thursday.
Police say they took three people into custody shortly after the shooting happened, but they do not believe they got the shooter.
The shooter is said to be between 17 and 18 years old, wearing khakis and a white shirt. Police do not believe he is a student at Normandy High School.
The school district said through an e-mail that it contacted parents about the shooting around 4:00 p.m., but one parent says he wishes that the district would have notified him sooner.
Parents say that the merger between Wellston School District and Normandy may have caused this shooting.
