(KMOV.com) -- One man is dead and a woman injured after an all-terrain vehicle crashed Wednesday around 5:42 p.m. on Old Alton Road in Madison County.
Police said Donald W. Enyart Sr., 41, of Granite City, Illinois and Shelly M. Smith, 28, of Madison, Illinois were on a 2011 Polaris ATV driving southbound following another ATV. They came upon a motor vehicle and changed lanes to pass it. When Enyart and Smith got back into the southbound lane, Enyart lost control and hit a light pole. Both were thrown from the ATV. Authorities report neither rider was wearing a helmet.
Enyart was airlifted to St. Louis University Hospital where he later died. Smith was taken to the hospital by ambulance. She suffered minor injuries.
Authorities believe alcohol may have been a factor in the accident.
