One of the oldest homes in St. Louis goes green
06:25 PM CDT on Thursday, May 1, 2008
(KMOV)- Every Thursday at 6 p.m., News 4 will air a report, which is green to give you ideas to help protect the environment.
This week, News 4 found one of the oldest homes in the area that is on the leading edge of going green.
If you take a look just around the corner from the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra on Grand, you will find the EarthWays Center on Grandel Square.
It is a lesson in conservation and more.
Starting with the front planting bed, which is designed to conserve water, they only have to cut the greenery once a year which reduces the pollution caused by a lawn mower.
It is a home built in 1885.
It was left vacant for about 13 years.
But after a half million dollar renovation, it now serves as a hi-tech progressive example of how you can modify your home, in ways that will protect the environment.
For example, the toilet conserves water. It uses the same water twice. When you are finished in the bathroom, you push the lever the first time and you get fresh clean water, which you use to wash your hands. Then that dirty water flows down the drain, and is used for a second time to flush the toilet.
The inside of the home is one big classroom on ecology.
With plenty of examples of how you can:
-- reduce energy use
--reuse materials
--or recycle a lot of items.
And they also offer classes, where you can learn to protect the environment.
So, do you want to learn more about how to go green?
It is easy.
You can take a class or get a tour of the EarthWays Center
There is a fee of $3 dollars per person or the flat rate of $45 dollars for a group.
