(KMOV) -- Most of the 330 Crestwood Elementary students weren't alive on September 11, 2001 but they are well aware of what happened.

Rather than dwell on that horrible day and its aftermath the day before the 9th anniversary, they made something positive come of it.  They used this anniversary as an opportunity to simply honor and thank area police officers, firefighters and paramedics.

About a dozen from Crestwood showed up at the school gym where they were serenaded and given a standing ovation.  Kids also handed out hand-written thank-you notes to them.

The  honorees were clearly touched by the hour-long program.

Principal Scott Taylor says his school has been doing this every year since 9-11-01.
