ANGELINA JOLIE HAS DOUBLE MASTECTOMY TO WARD OFF BREAST CANCER
NEW YORK (AP) -- Angelina Jolie says her doctor told her she had a nearly 9-in-10 chance of developing breast cancer. So she has taken matters into her own hand—by having both of her breasts removed. The actress revealed that she had a double mastectomy in an op-ed piece in today’s New York Times. She says the procedures took three months to complete. Jolie is just 37 years old. And she says she is going public with the news to help other women who may be facing the same dilemma. Now that women can be tested for the genetic marker for breast cancer, many women have chosen to have their breasts removed rather than run the risk of getting that form of cancer. But this is the first time someone so young—just 37 -- and so well known—has publicly announced that she has.
