(CBS News) Tom Hanks will be making his Broadway debut soon.

The two-time Oscar winner is in talks to play the lead in Nora Ephron's Broadway play "Lucky Guy" about renowned New York columnist Mike McAlary, reports the New York Times.

After months of speculation, a spokesperson for Hanks confirms to the Times that he is in negotiations to take on the role .

McAlary, a columnist for the Daily News who covered major police department corruption scandals in the '80s and '90s, won a Pulitzer Prize for commentary in 1998 for his coverage of the Abner Louima brutality case. McAlary died of colon cancer in 1998 at 41.

Ephron's play is reportedly a multi-character one-man show to be directed by George C. Wolfe, who won Tonys for "Angels in America" and "Bring in 'da Noise, Bring in 'da Funk."

The show is supposed to begin rehearsals in January and open later in  winter or early spring, according to the Times.
