(CBS)  Stars of "The Great Gatsby" stepped out Wednesday for the film's New York premiere, a fete appropriate for the glitzy, 3-D adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's Jazz Age novel.

Leonardo DiCaprio, who plays the self-made millionaire Jay Gatsby, was in attendance, as well as co-stars Carey Mulligan, Tobey MaGuire, Isla Fisher and Joel Edgarton.

On the premiere's black carpet, DiCaprio had high praise for the film's director, Baz Luhrmann, with whom he also worked on 1996's "Romeo + Juliet."

"Baz is one of the most exciting, nostalgic directors to work with," he said. "Once you're enveloped in his world of creativity you can't leave it."

Mulligan, who plays Gatsby's love interest Daisy Buchanan, wore a red Lanvin dress for the gala, held at Lincoln Center, while Fisher donned a floral number by Dolce & Gabbana.

The film's soundtrack -- which is now available to stream online -- was also well-represented, with Jay-Z and Florence Welch (of Florence + The Machine) among those in attendance.

"The Great Gatsby" arrives in theaters on May 10.
