(KMOV) – It’s one of the most popular and romantic movies of the last decade, but the on-screen chemistry from “The Notebook” was apparently flawed.

The film’s director, Nick Cassavetes, recently told VH1 that Ryan Gosling and co-star Rachel McAdams did not get along off camera.

According to the director, Gosling got so upset with McAdams at one point he asked the director to hire a new actress to take over her role.

“Maybe I’m not supposed to tell this story, but they were really not getting along one day on set. Really not. And Ryan came to me, and there’s 150 people standing in this big scene, and he says, “Nick come here.” And he’s doing a scene with Rachel and he says, “Would you take her out of here and bring in another actress to read off camera with me?” I said, “What?” He says, “I can’t. I can’t do it with her. I’m just not getting anything from this,” Cassavetes recalls.

Cassavetes says the two eventually hashed out their differences during an impromptu meeting.

He says the rest of filming “wasn’t smooth sailing, but it was smoother sailing.”
