ALTON, Ill. (AP) -- A larger-than-life bronzed sculpture of jazz great Miles Davis will be built in Alton’s downtown entertainment district.
The Telegraph reports the piece will be created by sculptor Preston Jackson and be installed in the middle of the southwestern Illinois city’s entertainment district.
Davis was born in Alton in 1926 and moved to East St. Louis a year later. He eventually went on to play with Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Art Blakey.
He died of a stroke in 1991.
Organizers of the effort to build the statue are raising money for the project and say they plan to display a rendering of the piece next month. They hope to have the sculpture in place by next May to mark what would have been Davis’ 88th birthday.
