(CBS News) Jeff Daniels claims to have the latest scoop about “The Newsroom.”

According to the actor, who plays Atlantis Cable News anchor Will McAvoy, the HBO drama series from Aaron Sorkin will indeed be back for a third season.

Daniels made the “official” announcement on his Twitter account Tuesday night, although HBO has yet to publicly confirm the show’s renewal.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, HBO has expressed interest in giving the greenlight for a third season, but negotiations are still ongoing with Sorkin, who is next slated to work on a screenplay for another Steve Jobs biopic.

In July, Sorkin, who won a Golden Globe and an Oscar for 2010’s “The Social Network” in addition to multiple Emmys for his prior series “The West Wing,” made an appearance on “CBS This Morning,” where Gayle King asked if he’d be interested in coming back for a third season of “The Newsroom.”

“Of course, who wouldn’t?” Sorkin replied at the time. “But I’m still tinkering with the second season.”

“The Newsroom” received a somewhat tepid reception from TV critics when it first premiered in 2012. The second season garnered a warmer response, with an improvement over the first in terms of both ratings and critical acclaim.

Daniels and reoccurring guest star Jane Fonda are both now up for Emmy Awardsat this year’s ceremony, which airs Sept. 22 on CBS.

“The Newsroom” airs Sunday nights at 10 p.m. ET on HBO and will wrap up its second season on Sept. 15.
