(CBS) -- Carey Mulligan has reportedly emerged as the front-runner for the role of Hillary Rodham Clinton in “Rodham,” a biopic about the former first lady, New York senator and secretary of state.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the British “Great Gatsby” actress, 28, is the producers’ top choice to play Clinton in the film, and will reportedly soon meet with director James Ponsoldt.
Several American actresses have also been considered for the part, including Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Chastain and Emma Stone, THR reports.
“Rodham” focuses on the early years of Clinton’s career, including her time as a young lawyer on the committee involved in President Richard Nixon’s impeachment and her relationship with future husband (and president) Bill Clinton.
In addition to playing Daisy Buchanan in “The Great Gatsby,” Mulligan’s other film credits include roles in “Drive,” “Shame” and “Never Let Me Go.” She’ll be seen next in the Coen brothers’ “Inside Llewyn Davis.”
