(CBS News) -- As one chapter, or TV series, ends...another begins.

With many "Breaking Bad" fans bracing themselves for the upcoming series finale, creator and showrunner Vince Gilligan is already lining up his next project.

Gilligan, 46, recently reached a deal with CBS to create a weekly one-hour cop drama series called "Battle Creek" for the 2014-2015 season. Sony Pictures Television, the studio which produces "Breaking Bad" and has an exclusive contract with Gilligan, made the announcement in a press release Wednesday.

David Shore, another acclaimed TV producer who created Fox's hit series "House," will also be involved in the project.

"Battle Creek" was initially developed at CBS back in 2002, years before Gilligan created "Breaking Bad," which premiered on AMC in 2008.

CBS has committed to 13 episodes of the new series, according to The New York Times, a somewhat rare move in the industry. Usually, only a pilot episode is created at first, but perhaps it's no surprise that so many episodes were ordered from the get-go, given Gilligan's track record.

Fresh off accepting the Emmy Award for outstanding drama series, the TV producer has become one of the hottest, and most sought-after, names in Hollywood.

In addition to "Battle Creek," Gilligan will also be keeping busy with a planned "Breaking Bad" spin-off, "Better Call Saul."

The final episode of "Breaking Bad" airs this Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
