Get
involved: Local literacy groups
Did you know that nearly half of American adults have limited basic reading and
writing skills according to the National Adult Literacy Survey? Some 17 percent
of Missouri adults and 21 percent of Illinois adults score in the lowest of five
levels of literacy and face life with few options. In addition, 28 percent of
Missourians and 38 percent of Illinoisans age 16 and older do not have a high
school diploma or GED, severely limiting their employment options. Children's
literacy levels in both states are strongly linked to the educational level of
their parents, especially their mothers.
You can help fight illiteracy
by teaching an adult to read, tutoring someone as they prepare to take the GED,
reading to a child, attending a literacy walk, or participating in other volunteer
activities. Check out the links below and get involved with promoting literacy
today.
