(KMOV) - As part of the new 64/40 project, a portion of the highway will be shut down for the weekend. Motorists will be required to take a detour.

Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, crews will begin demolishing three bridges over 64/40 between Clayton-Skinker and Hanley. The bridges are at Bellevue Avenue, Boland Place and Highland Terrace.

To give motorists an idea of what they will face this weekend, News 4 drove both detours to compare the routes to the highway. It is important to note, however, there will be more traffic on the detours after the highway is shutdown. Expect heavy congestion on both detours.

Westbound I-64 / US-40 detour:

  • Take the CLAYTON RD / SKINKER BLVD exit (EXIT 34B).
  • Turn RIGHT onto S SKINKER BLVD.
  • Turn LEFT onto FOREST PARK PKWY/MILLBROOK BLVD.
  • Turn LEFT onto I-170 South
  • Merge onto I-64/US-40 West.

Detour: 5.6 miles, 10 minutes

64/40: 2.5 miles, 3 minutes

During the detour most side street access to and from Clayton Road will be closed, except for signalized intersections at Big Bend, Bellevue and DeMun.

For more information on side street closures, visit the Missouri Department of Transformation website ( http://www.thenewi64.org/GetTrafficUpdates.do).

The freeway closure will be in effect until 5:30 a.m., Monday, August 20.

Travelers can get up-to-the-minute traffic information on interstates or
major state routes by dialing 5-1-1 from most cell phones; if 5-1-1
isn't available from your carrier, please dial 877-478-5511
(877-4STL-511). Travelers may also route their trips around any ramp,
bridge or road closures by using the MoDOT "Map My Trip" tool at

Leave early and be patient

Of course there are no problems this morning (1/2/08)--a lot of people are still on vacation, and a lot of schools are not in session. Let's not get too excited about the lack of traffic problems just yet.

Instead of 64/40, try taking Page east to Kingshighway. Sure, there are lots of 4 way stops but not much traffic.
