Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT IS THE APA?|
The Animal Protective Association of MO is a private, not for profit charitable organization, founded in 1922, that provides shelter for lost and unwanted animals, attempts to find homes for animals in need, and provides public programs in response to the needs of the community. The APA is a pioneer in developing programs such as early spay/neuter to help solve the pet overpopulation problem, PetReach Animal Assisted Activities, which serves those people who are confined and without pets, as well as educational opportunities for children and adults. The APA relies solely on donations for its operation. |

Our expertise is in helping dogs and cats. We do not have the licensing or staff to handle wildlife or other types of animals. Since pet overpopulation is so severe, we focus our efforts exclusively on dogs and cats.
HOW MANY ANIMALS COME TO THE SHELTER?
In a year we handle more than 4,000 animals. On a day-to-day basis the numbers vary due to the season. We can house and care for about 225 to 250 animals at a time.
WHY CHARGE FOR THESE ANIMALS?
It is expensive to shelter, feed and care for the animals. Some of them require veterinary care before they can be adopted. We have a small professional staff that does great work while making moderate wages. Also, people tend to value items more if they have invested something in them. We want adopters to know that adopting a companion animal will be an expense. (We estimate that with proper vet care, a nutritious diet, and general care, it costs the average pet owner about $500.00 a year to keep a companion animal.)
Our charges are modest considering they include microchipping, vaccinations, heartworm test for dogs, feline leukemia test for cats, worming, flea & tick preventatives, spaying or neutering and a limited basic health car plan.
The adoption fee for all cats and dogs is $120. This covers only a portion of our costs to treat and care for the animals.
*We have discounted rates for senior citizens (60 & over) who adopt and special discounts when you adopt a pet who has been at the APA for six months or longer.
