(KMOV)-- Sam Bradford’s absence is disappointing but not catastrophic. I don’t understand why negotiations don’t start until two weeks before camp opens. That said, I would think Bradford would be signed on time for Saturday’s first full squad practice.

On the subject of Bradford, he needs to be the starter. Period. You drafted him first overall and will give him $50 million to be a difference maker. A.J. Feeley is not a difference maker. I hope he’ll be better than Kyle Boller was here last year but Bradford is the future. Plus why not let Bradford get his feet wet when Steven Jackson is fresh early in the season when he can dominate games and take the load off the young quarterback.

Rookie Roger Saffold took snaps at left tackle and Jason Smith took reps at right tackle. It’s smart for the coaching staff to keep an open mind about how that plays out. Smith only has a half season’s more experience than Saffold who played on the left side in college. Smith played his best football as a rookie at right tackle. Come September 12, it will be all about who can protect Bradford’s blind side best. That may be Saffold.

I hope receiver Mardy Gilyard becomes an integral part of the offense. He is a great talker who adds a little spice, a little cockiness and a little fun to what was, at least  last season, a dull team.  We(the media) will be wearing out the carpet in front of his locker.
