(KMOV) -- The Rams didn't get the extra first round pick that Cleveland had to offer in next month's draft. But they did land two first rounders in 2013 and 2014. The fact that they did business with the Redskins and not the Browns tells me Jeff Fisher is more interested in building for the future than making a quick splash. And I appreciate that approach.

That said, the Rams will have three of the first 39 picks in April. They should come away with three impact guys that can contribute right away. Or they can package the two second rounders to move up into the late first round if they covet a specific player. If they remain at six overall, they likely won't get a shot at Oklahoma State wide receiver Justin Blackmon. But they knew that before executing the trade. So that tells me they think they can address a need at receiver in free agency (Vincent Jackson) or later in the draft. And there will be talented guys like Baylor's Kendall Wright available late in round one or early in round two. Or they could pull the trigger on Notre Dame's Michael Floyd. He has the speed and hands of Blackmon but has even better size.  He has star potential.

Don't rule out Fisher and Les Snead going defense with that sixth pick either. If cornerback Morris Claiborne(LSU) falls out of the top five, he'll be tough to pass on. South Carolina defensive end Melvin Ingram could be the pick at six as well. That guy was the best player on the field every time I watched the Gamecocks and I watch a lot of SEC football.

Free agency opens this week. What the Rams do there will give us a road map to the draft. If they spend money on a guy like Jackson, they'll likely go defense with their first pick. Unless they fall in love with Alabama running back Trent Richardson. The guy I'd love to see the Rams pursue is Saints guard Carl Nicks. He would be a perfect complement to Harvey Dahl at guard.
