On Thursday the weather rebounded nicely. It was sunny skies and the temperature was back in the 70s. The Dominican National Team was in Jupiter for a tune up game with the Redbirds before the World Baseball Classic. Fans from all over were at Roger Dean Stadium to attend this game. Mets' fans were there to cheer for their star Jose Reyes. The Boston faithful were there to root for David "Pappi" Ortiz and catch a glimpse of former Boston star Pedro Martinez who is still without a team. Boston fans sitting next to us indicated they'd love to have a healthy Martinez back in a Red Sox uniform. Yankee fans were there to see A-Rod but a cyst on his hip kept him out of the line-up for this game. Father and son combination Felipe and Moises Alou have been re-united on this team for what is probably their last hurrah as a coach-player combination. Cardinals' superstar Albert Pujols was supposed to play for the Dominican team but backed out because of recovery from elbow surgery.
The game didn't start well for the Cardinals. The Dominicans jumped on Cardinals' hurler Todd Wellemeyer for three hits and one run in the first inning. It looked like it could be a repeat of the 10-1 thrashing they gave the Florida Marlins earlier in the week. Wellemeyer settled down though in the second and shut the Dominicans out for the next three innings. Relievers Ryan Franklin, Josh Kinney, Chis Perez and Jason Motte then held the Dominicans scoreless the rest of the game. The Cardinals got RBIs from Khalil Greene, Skip Schumaker and Ryan Ludwick and won the game 4-1.
This was a really good day. I saw a collection of great players, watched three young Cardinal relievers dominate these superstars, my father Sam and brother Tim got quite a collection of player autographs, the game barely lasted two hours which meant I finally got my day at the beach.
