Jailed for expired driver's license

It may not seem fair, but it is certainly legal, I'm told for municipal police departments to jail drivers with expired licenses.  Missouri Highway Patrol tells me cities can enforce laws as they see fit as long as it is consistent ot tougher than what the state does.

It's obvious that many cities don't do this since they neither have the time or the jail space to lock up drivers for this.

But Beverly Hills, Missouri does and police there are not shy about people knowing about it.  They tell me driving without a license is illegal and it would be wrong to let drivers go with just a ticket.  Drivers are jailed and must post bond.

Incidently the Highway Patrol says they will lock up individuals with expired driver's licenses if it is a third offense, which is a felony.

Keep in mind many smaller municipalities may lock up drivers with expired licenses, so it's worth waiting in line to get that license renewed.
