If you talk to people around Interstate 55 they'll tell you that on a daily basis they see people darting across the highway getting from one side to another. And it's not just the young people that do this. It's the adults as well.
Today a 14-year-old young man was hit and killed as he tried to cross the highway. His two friends made it to the center median but Ean McDaniel was struck by a Volkswagen in the southbound lanes. Witnesses tell a horrific story of seeing the young man thrown into the air after the impact. One witness says the driver of the car sat behind the wheel for more than 45 minutes after police arrived because he was too distraught to get out of his car.
Police accident reconstruction investigators were on the scene for several hours. Their report should be available in 12 to 16 weeks but it would appear this is a tragic accident.
