At least it was brief. Tuesday will see temperatures rise into the upper 90s for the second day in a row. With heat indicies expected to soar to near 110 an Extensive Heat Warning is in effect through Tuesday evening. About the time the heat warning expires we should see the threat for thunderstorms move into the area. Some of the storms could be severe with the primary risk being damaging wind although there is also a slight chance of large hail. After that temperatures should actually fall below normal for the next couple of weeks.
As hot as it's been this August (so far) doesn't compare to the heat wave we suffered through last August. See Steve Templeton's earlier post entitled Big Time Heat On The Way for more on the heat wave of August, 2007
