Missouri Literacy Programs

Carondelet Family Literacy
The program serves the Carondelet area with instruction in basic literacy, preparation for the Missouri GED certificate and lessons for immigrants in English as a Second Language. College For Living-Paraquad
The College For Living empowers people with developmental disabilities to live as full and productive members of society. International Institute
Specialized instruction in English for Speakers of Other Languages is provided to more than 3,000 annually. Classes also provide literacy, general education, basic computer training, prevocational, citizenship, GED and TOEFL preparation. LIFT-Missouri
Literacy Investment for Tomorrow (LIFT) develops and promotes resources to increase the literacy skills of Missourians. Services include training and on-site technical assistance for educators and tutors; accessible resources for teachers, tutors and program administrators; and teaching parents to be involved with their children's schools. Missouri Humanities Council
The Missouri Humanities Council offers a literacy program called READ from the START, which is a family reading program geared to parents and caregivers of children ages 0-5. Not-for-profit organizations working with "at-risk" families may apply to host READ from the START. Fifteen to twenty families participate in each two-session program. Parkway Area Adult Education and Literacy
Classes are offered in basic reading, math and English as well as GED preparation and English as a Second Language classes. There is also a literacy program with tutors for adults at 0-5 reading levels. Classes are free and available at several locations throughout St. Louis County to anyone 16 years or older not enrolled in high school. Ritenour Adult Education and Literacy

Adult education classes to upgrade basic reading, math and English skills are offered, along with literacy education, English as a Second Language and GED preparation classes. A family literacy class provides one free childcare for parents whose children are 0-6 years and two free bus tokens for students who attend at least two hours. Rockwood School District Adult Education and Literacy
Classes are offered in basic reading, math and writing in addition to GED preparation, an English as a Second Language program and classes for students preparing for U.S. Citizenship. St. Louis Community College at Meramec Adult Education and Literacy
Classes offer instruction in basic reading, math, English and GED preparation. Literacy education for low level students is also offered. St. Louis Public Library
Resources are offered for students, tutors, teachers and parents in a wide variety of areas including Youth Services, Adult Education, English as a Second Language and Community Connection. All branches offer literacy resources and information, including children and adult first-readers, parenting books on literacy and literacy tutoring instruction books. St. Louis Public Schools Adult Education and Literacy Free classes are offered in adult basic education, GED preparation, family literacy, academic upgrade, English for Speakers of Other Languages, workplace literacy and life skills instruction and SkillsTutor.com. Talking Tapes: Textbooks on Tape
Textbooks on Tape are resources for students from kindergarten to 12th grade with visual, physical, cognitive and learning disabilities. There is no annual membership or contract required and no special listening equipment needed. All recordings are on two-track cassette tapes. University City Adult Basic Education
The program provides basic educational skills to students preparing for the GED or learning English as a Second Language, and it offers literacy education for low level reading skills. Webster University Student Literacy Corps
The Student Literacy Corps (SLC) trains Webster University students as reading tutors and places them in local schools and agencies that provide literacy education. Agencies wishing to be added to the SLC tutoring site list should contact Kate Northcott at 314-968-7479.

YMCA Beginning Babies With Books
This is an early intervention literacy program that encourages parents to read to their children daily, beginning soon after birth. Books are available at the clinics. The program also provides reading sessions to build the excitement for reading to the children and to model good reading techniques for parents. YMCA Literacy Council
This volunteer organization matches trained tutors with adult students who are 18 years or older. These tutors work with students who need instruction in reading or English as a Second Language at locations throughout the metro area. YMCA YRead Tutoring Program
The program pairs trained tutors with youth ages 7-14 who are struggling with reading. The child is matched with a tutor who will meet with that child in a local library two times a week for one hour sessions.
