Craig Cheatham

Investigative Reporter
Craig Cheatham, News 4 St. Louis reporter Craig Cheatham joined KMOV-TV as a full-time Reporter in June 1999. His stories have exposed criminal wrongdoing, sparked state and federal investigations, legislative hearings and helped create laws.

Craig is a two-time winner of the duPont-Columbia Silver Baton, the broadcasting equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize. He's received numerous national jornalism honors, including the prestigious George Foster Peabody award.

Craig received the Peabody award and his second duPont for "Left Behind" a series of 21 stories and thirty-minute special exposing widespread problems in the East St. Louis school district. His investigation revealed that the district repeatedly violated state and federal laws and created political patronage jobs instead of hiring teachers. The investigation prompted services for dozens of students who had been denied special education services by the district.

Craig's investigations have also taken him to South America. In 2002, he traveled to the Andes Mountains to uncover the story of a St. Louis company polluting the town of La Oroya, Peru. His series, "La Oroya, City of Lead," examined a metal smelter and its effect on the residents of La Oroya. A Peruvian Congressman played Craig's series at a special hearing and the Peruvian Congress passed legislation designed to help residents in La Oroya.

In 2005, Craig returned to La Oroya for another series of reports. His ongoing investigation has earned six national awards, including the IRE Certificate, the Sidney Hillman award and the Gerald Loeb award, the highest honor in business and financial journalism.

Since arriving at KMOV Channel 4, Craig's investigations have uncovered millions of dollars in waste at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, tracked convicted killers violating parole and exposed flaws in St. Louis building inspections that prompted changes in city policy.

Prior to coming to "News 4 St. Louis," Craig was a Reporter/Anchor at KOIN-TV in Portland, Ore., where he testified as an "expert witness" at a series of Oregon legislative hearings prompted by his expose on childcare. Oregon lawmakers then passed two laws designed to improve childcare, including a law requiring inspections of at-home daycare for the first time in decades.

Craig started his career in radio. In 1986, as a 24-year-old radio reporter in Lexington, Kentucky, he produced a documentary that prompted services for young survivors and earned eight national awards, including the Robert F. Kennedy award and his first duPont award.

Craig, a native of Louisville, Kentucky, is a University of Kentucky graduate and a die-hard "Big Blue" basketball fan. In his spare time, he is active in his church and serves on the board of directors at the Christian Activity Center in East St. Louis. He loves to play sports and watch movies, but his favorite thing to do is spend time with his wife Debbie and their children, Joe and Rachel.
